AREA 1
Policy & Integrated Concept

Hans-Martin HENNING is deputy director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg, Germany and director of the division Thermal Systems and Buildings at Fraunhofer ISE. Dr. Henning finished his PhD in physics in 1993 at the University Oldenburg and started his work at Fraunhofer ISE in 1994. Key areas of his research are in the following topics: solar cooling and refrigeration, adsorption technology, heat storage based on sorption technology and phase change materials and in general in the field of energy in buildings. He was and is responsible for many national and international research projects and in the years 1999 to 2011 he was responsible Operating Agent of two large Tasks in the field of solar cooling which were carried out in the framework of the Solar Heating and Cooling Programmes of IEA. Recently, Dr. Henning is actively involved in the development of computer models for the simulation of complex energy system.
Adam BROWN, Senior Energy Analyst at the International Energy Agency in Paris, working in the Renewable Energy Division, has expert knowledge of sustainable energy supply and related industrial and environmental concerns, gained through 30 years experience in planning, developing and managing programmes for Government and in consultancy assignments for other clients in the UK and overseas. In his current role at the IEA in Paris, he was one of the main authors of a major review of renewable energy policy, published in October 2011 (Deploying Renewables 2011), and of the IEA’s Biofuels for Transport Roadmap and the roadmap on Bioenergy, published in May 2012 and continues to work on renewables technology and policy issues.

Photovoltaic

Arnulf Jager WALDAU is a Scientific Officer and Senior Scientist at the Renewable Energy Unit, Institute for Energy and Transport of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre since 2001. Since 1987 he works in the field of material research for solar cells and holds patents on semiconductor material deposition for thin film solar cells and solar module design. Since 2011 he is the Technical Chairman of the European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference (EUPVSEC) and served as Conference Chairperson of the E-MRS Spring Meeting in 2009 and 2013.
Dr. Jäger-Waldau was a Lead Author for Solar Energy of the Special Report of the IPCC on Renewable Energy and Climate Change Mitigation, which was approved by the General Assembly of the IPCC in May 2011. He served as a reviewer of the Global Energy Assessment Report (GEA) published in 2012 and is currently a reviewer of the 5th Assessment Report (AR5) of IPCC (work in progress).

Solar Thermal Applications

Werner WEISS, director of AEE – Institute for Sustainable Technologies (AEE INTEC) in Austria and since June 2010 chairman of the Solar Heating and Cooling Programme of the International Energy Agency (IEA). Furthermore he is board member of the European Technology Platform on Renewable Heating and Cooling. He has been project co-ordinator of more than 30 national, European and international solar thermal energy projects.
His main research activities are on solar combi-systems and solar heat for industrial processes. Since 2007 he is lecturer at Vienna University of Technology and faculty member of the continuing education centre.

Innovative Bioclimatic Architecture

Deo PRASAD is an international authority on sustainable buildings and cities and among the leading advocates for sustainability in Australia. He is a SCIENTIA Professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. Also, Chief Executive Officer of CRC for Low Carbon Living Ltd. Deo won the 2006 Royal Australian Institute of Architect’s National Education Award for contribution to ‘sustainability education, research and design’. He has also won the Federal Government’s national award for ‘outstanding contribution to energy related research’. Deo has been President of the ANZSES and Director of ISES and in 2009 Deo has been selected by the prestigious Asia Pacific Green Building Journal ‘FuturArc’ as one of the 18 most influential people promoting sustainable buildings in the Asia Pacific region.

Wind Energy

Stephen G. SAWYER, Secretary General of Global Wind Energy Council, joined as its first post here in April 2007. The Global Wind Energy Council represents the major wind energy associations as well as the major companies involved in the global wind industry. Steve has worked in the energy and environment field since 1978, with a particular focus on climate change and renewable energy since 1988. He spent many years working for Greenpeace International, representing the organization at intergovernmental and industry fora primarily on energy and climate issues. He was the CEO of both Greenpeace USA (’86 to ’88) and Greenpeace International (’88-93’), and a member of its international Board of Directors from 1983-1988 and 1993-1995. He has served as Head of Delegation to many UNFCCC negotiations, as well as leading delegations to many other intergovernmental negotiations. Steve is also a founding member of the REN21 Renewable Energy Policy Network. He grew up in rural New Hampshire and holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Haverford College.
Peter Hauge MADSEN is head of a department, DTU Wind Energy, at the Technical University of Denmark. PHM has been involved with energy research and research management for more than 30 years, primarily in the field of wind energy. In addition to working at Risoe National Laboratory until 2005, he has had a position as research manager at Siemens Wind Power and as head of the project certification section at Det Norske Veritas. Since 2009, PHM has been with Risoe DTU as head of the Wind Energy Division, which by 1st January 2012, became part of DTU Wind Energy. This department also includes two groups from DTU Mechanical Engineering, whose core activities are fluid dynamics and composite mechanics, and two groups from the Risø DTU Materials Research Division, where the research is focussed on composite materials and metals. PHM chairs the Danish national committee for wind turbine standardization and the European Energy research Alliance’s joint program for wind energy. He holds a MSc and a PhD from the Technical University of Denmark.

Biomass Utilization & Conversion

Jin-Suk LEE is Principal Researcher, Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) since 1987 and Steering Committee Member of Asia Biomass Association since Jan. 2007. He also plays a role of Editorial Board Member, Bio-resource Technology (SCI Journal). Bioenergy is a Major Research Interests such as over 40 publications in international journals, 10 papers in Korean journals, and 25 patents on bioenergy technologies. Education background is B.S. in Chemical Engineering (Korea University, Korea) for 1976 to 1980, M.S. in Chemical Engineering (Korea University, Korea) for 1980 to 1982, and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (Lehigh University, USA) for 1982 to 1987.

Hydrogen & Fuel Cell

Etsuo AKIBA is the head of hydrogen storage materials division and principal researcher of International Institute for Carbon-Neutral Energy Research (I2CNER), and professor of faculty of Engineering, Kyushu University from December 2010. He earned Ph. D degree from The University of Tokyo in 1979 in physical chemistry. He joined National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in 1979 and started the research on metal hydrides. During his over 30 year carrier on the research and development of hydrogen storage materials, he developed various types of materials including Ti based BCC structured alloys. He received several awards including the Herbert C. Brown Award for Innovations in Hydrogen Research, Purdue University, USA in 2008 and The IPHE Technical Achievement Award in 2010.

Ocean Energy

Atilla INCECIK is Professor of Offshore Engineering and Head of Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at Strathclyde University, Glasgow. Professor Incecik has been responsible for the development of design and analysis tools and model testing of marine and offshore engineering systems during his research activities both in industry and academia. His current research includes development of dynamic load and response prediction tools for the design and installation of floating offshore platforms and marine renewable energy devices; investigation of sources and interaction of potential and viscous origin forces to determine low frequency motions of moored offshore vessels; investigation of low cycle fatigue loading on floating production, storage and offloading systems. Professor Incecik is the Research Manager of Industrial Doctoral Centre for Offshore Renewable Energy (IDCORE). He is an Editor-in-Chief of Ocean Engineering.

Geothermal Energy & Ground-Source Heat Pump

Roland N. HORNE is the Thomas Davis Barrow Professor of Earth Sciences and Professor of Energy Resources Engineering at Stanford University, and Director of the Stanford Geothermal Program. He was formerly the Chairman of the Department of Petroleum Engineering at Stanford from 1995 to 2006. He is best known for his work in well test interpretation, production optimization, and tracer analysis of fractured geothermal reservoirs. So far in his academic career he has supervised the graduate research of 42 PhD and 115 MS students, including about 50 in geothermal topics. Roland is an Honorary Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and a member of the US National Academy of Engineering. He served on the International Geothermal Association (IGA) Board 1998-2001, 2001-2004, and 2007-2010, and is the 2010-2013 President of IGA. He was Technical Program Chairman of the World Geothermal Congress 2005 in Turkey and 2010 in Bali, and will be again in Melbourne in 2015. Roland is one of the founders of the IGA online database of geothermal conference papers.

Energy Network and Power Electronics

Roland BAUER got his Diploma in Electrical Engineering 1997 from the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg majoring in power systems, power electronics, electrical drives and control. Currently he is team leader for strategic grid development and market modeling in the strategic network planning department of 50Hertz, one of the four German TSOs. He is working on the German national network development plan and the European ten year network development plan TYNDP. By that he is focusing on the development the future grids necessary for the green transition, the “Energiewende” in Germany. Roland Bauer did his PHD thesis on state space modeling of flexible AC transmission systems and power electronics in transeuropean energy systems as a stipendiary of the German Research Foundation (DFG). Before that he worked for Siemens AG.
Michael H. CODDINGTON, Principal Engineer in Solar Systems Integration and other electric utility system, NREL, is responsible for research efforts in interconnection technology, policy support, and codes and standards. Key focus is overcoming barriers to interconnecting PV to the utility grid in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective manner. Work with national and state organizations to implement and improve interconnection guidelines based on technical rationale and national codes and standards. Responsible for inspecting DOE Laboratory projects which must meet National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements. Work with national standard organizations developing interconnection and smart grid standards (IEEE 2030 Smart Grid Interoperability, Recorder, IEEE 1547.6, Co-secretary, IEEE P1547a / IEEEP1547.8 working groups, NEC 690 / 705 working group, UL1741 Standard Technical Panel Member). Member of the Steering Committee, DOE Solar ABCs. Microgrid Manager, USDOE Solar Decathlon, 2009, 2011.

AREA 11
Energy Conservation & Heat Pump

Monica AXELL, General Manager, Heat Pump Centre IEA, has been employed at SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden since 1989. She has been Head of Section in the field of Building Services Engineering since 2002. She is Ass.Head of the Department of Energy Technology at SP since 2012. She has been General Manager of the IEA Heat Pump Centre since 2004. The Heat Pump Centre is a world-wide source of information on heat pumping technologies with 15 member countries including Japan, South Korea, US and Canada. She has a Licentiate Engineering Degree in combustion technology from Chalmers University of technology and PhD Degree in Building Services Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology. Monica has more than 20 years of experience of research in the field of renewable energy and improved energy efficiency in buildings and industry. She is Swedish expert in CEN TC113. During the last years she has increased the R&D activities towards smart grid and smart cities.
John GRIMES was pointed in 2008 as the Chief Executive of the Australian Solar Council, the oldest and largest solar organisation in Australia. John is a regular media commentator and strong advocate for the solar industry. He sits on several expert advisory panels to the Australian government on solar issues. John is also a Director of the International Solar Energy Society, based in Germany. With a strong background John has a background in environmental innovation, and early stage commercialisation. He has worked as a diplomat, and he started his career as an officer in the Royal Australian Air Force.

AREA 12
Small Hydro & Non-Conventional Energy

Eduard DOUJAK obtained his Dr. degree in Mechanical Engineering of the Vienna University of Technology of Vienna in 2000. He is currently working as an Assistance Professor at the Institute for Energy Systems and Thermodynamics at / Research Group of Fluid-Flow Machinery the Vienna University of Technology. His current major research fields are the development of a Small Hydro Pump-turbine for decentralized energy production and storage. Further on he investigated the possibility of Small Hydropower Plant pressure pipe desilting by using strongly swirling flow in an Axial Hydro cyclone. In this matter he holds national and international patents and received the national INVENTUM price for the second best invention in 2011. He is member of several Advisory Committees of international conferences. Currently he is also teaching Hydropower Development and Operation at the Tribhuvan University of Kathmandu in Nepal.
